Protect Your Landscape With These Effective Drainage Solutions

Landscaping is a lot more difficult than people give it credit for. One problem you will have to guard against in any landscape around a home is flooding. To prevent a garden from being flooded, you must ensure that there is proper drainage to account for the amount of water the yard is likely to receive. Let’s review some efficient options to protect your landscaping.

Dry Wells

A dry well usually comes in one of two forms — a gravel-filled pit or a container filled with holes. In either case, this dry well will be located underground in a location where it is supposed to collect stormwater. This water will then sit in the dry well until it safely seeps back into the surrounding soil.

French Drains

Another option is to utilize French drains. A French drain is basically a trench filled with gravel and includes a pipe that has been perforated with holes that help to redirect water away from the home or other area with poor natural drainage. The trench should be dug at an angle, and the pipe inside should be covered with layers of gravel and soil.

Pervious Paving

An option for protecting against flooding you may not have considered is pervious paving. This includes pavers and concrete that is porous. The rainwater seeps through this pervious paving and then drains away from where it would instead collect above ground. There are also plastic solutions that form a grid that can be used as another pervious paving choice. Either way, it will help to reduce runoff on the surface and instead redirect that rain underground, where it could help replenish groundwater.

Rain Garden

A rain garden is a shallow depression that has been made into the landscaping. It is filled with decorative plants that help absorb water that runs into these depressions and away from areas that are prone to flooding. These plants can also help filter out pollutants like chemicals that may exist in rainwater.

Swales

Swales, similar in function to rain gardens, are short channels placed into the ground that help redirect rainwater and snowmelt. These shallow channels can also be populated with plants to help improve the effect of the drainage. As such, a swale can be both a functional and aesthetic component of your landscaping.
